Kit List for Rock Climbing
  • Socks: a pair of synthetic or wool/synthetic blend.
  • Thermal base layer top: made of polyester or wool, with no cotton.
  • Fleece: one for the upper body, plus a spare or a synthetic insulating layer.
  • Windshirt or lightweight softshell jacket: ideal for dry conditions.
  • Climbing trousers: made of polycotton, polyester, or softshell, no jeans.
  • Outer shell: a waterproof jacket and over trousers. Lightweight waterproofs are OK. 
  • Hat and gloves: a warm hat and two pairs of gloves are useful even in the summer.
  • Shoes: approach trainers or boots.
  • Climbing shoes: a pair of comfy rock shoes large enough so that you can wear them all day.
  • Rucksack: a climbing pack of around 30 litres.
  • Hydration bladder and/or water bottles: at least 2 litres. One bladder and one bottle are useful.
  • Survival Bag.
  • Whistle.
  • Compass.
  • Watch.
  • Map: OS or BMC/Harveys. The map should be weatherproofed in a clear map case.
  • Head torch.
  • Sunglasses.
  • Sun hat.
  • Sun cream.
  • Mobile phone in a waterproof case.
  • Camera.
  • Personal first aid kit: plasters, blister kit, personal medication, including an asthma inhaler if you have one.
  • Loo roll and plastic zip bags.
  • Helmet: lightweight plastic or foam climbing helmet.
  • Harness: an adjustable comfy climbing harness.
  • Belay device with a carabiner.
  • Rack: a standard climbing rack should include a set of wall nuts sizes 1-11; a set of hexes sizes 1-4; a set of 6 cams sizes 0.3-2; 6 quick-draws; 4 alpine quick-draws x 60 cm; 2 slings x 120 cm, 1 sling x 240 cm; 4 screw gate carabiners. 
  • Prussik: two prussik loops made of 6mm cord, on a carabiner.
  • Devices you would like to test: 2 oval screw gate carabiners; 2 HMS carabiners; grigri, t-block, jumar; micro traxion; silent partner; revo; shunt.
  • Chalk bag with chalk.
  • Nut key.
  • Lunches and snacks: such as pack lunch, energy bars, dried fruit.
  • We can provide ropes, rack, and other technical equipment. However, the kit list must be discussed in advance. Action photos are provided as well!
