Kit List for Cuillin Ridge
- Socks: a medium to thick pair of synthetic or wool/synthetic blend.
- Thermal base layer top: made of polyester or wool, with no cotton.
- Fleece: one for the upper body, plus a spare or a synthetic insulating layer.
- Windshirt or lightweight softshell jacket: ideal for dry conditions.
- Walking trousers: made of polycotton, polyester, or softshell, no jeans.
- Outer shell: a waterproof jacket and over trousers. Lightweight waterproofs are acceptable. The trousers should have at least a knee-length zip for easy fitting over boots. The waterproofs are likely to be damaged on gabbro rock.
- Hat and gloves: a warm hat and two pairs of gloves are useful even in the summer. Cheap and durable leather work or gardening gloves are ideal.
- Boots: stiff walking boots with good lateral stiffness, such as B1.
- Rucksack: a medium volume of around 45 litres and weighing under 10 kilograms is the best. Use a strong plastic rucksack liner to keep the contents dry. External covers will be blown away. Everything needs to fit inside your bag.
- Hydration bladder and/or water bottles: 2 litres. One bladder and one bottle are useful. A cocktail straw to drink water from shallow sources is vital.
- Whistle.
- Compass.
- Watch.
- Map: OS or BMC/Harveys. The map should be weatherproofed in a clear map case.
- Head torch.
- Sunglasses.
- Sun hat.
- Sun cream.
- Sleeping bag: a lightweight 2 or 3 season bag goes inside a compression sack and a dry bag.
- Waterproof bivvy bag: made of a lightweight Gore-Tex or other breathable fabric. A lightweight tent is also possible.
- Sleeping mat: a foam Karrimat or an inflatable Thermarest.
- Mug.
- Spoon.
- Lighter.
- Mobile phone in a waterproof case.
- Camera.
- Personal first aid kit: plasters, blister kit, personal medication, including an asthma inhaler if you have one.
- Loo roll and plastic zip bags.
- Trekking poles: optional but useful in descent. To keep weight down, consider taking one that can fit inside your pack when not in use.
- Helmet: can be provided but bring one along if you can.
- Harness: can be provided, but you can use your own. Adjustable leg-loops are preferable. Please make sure it fits over all clothing and can be put on over boots.
- Belay device, two carabiners, and cows tail: can be provided.
- Gas stove: is provided.
- Lunches, snacks, dinner, and breakfast: please ask for advice. Generally, for breakfast and dinner, dehydrated packets are available from most outdoor shops. Hydrated meals are heavier to carry. You will also need two lunches and enough snacks for two days, such as energy bars and dried fruit.

- The kit list must be discussed well in advance and adapted to the weather.
