- Majestic, breathtaking, and challenging – that is what a Munro is. These Scottish mountains, towering over 3,000ft/914m, are named after Sir Hugh Munro, who first surveyed and published their list in the Scottish Mountaineering Club’s journal in 1891. There are 282 Munros scattered across Scotland, each with its own unique character and beauty.
- At the top of the list is Ben Nevis, the highest Munro at 4,411ft/1,345m. But don’t be fooled – lower peaks such as the 12 airy ones in Black Cuillin on Skye and the narrowest ridge of Aonach Eagach in Glen Coe offer a more challenging climb.
- For adventure seekers, Munro bagging has become a popular activity. Hikers challenge themselves to climb as many peaks as possible, with over 6,000 individuals called ‘compleatists’ or Munroists, having climbed them all so far. The quickest round record was set by Munroist Jamie Aarons in 2023, who completed the challenge in just 31 days, 10 hours, and 27 minutes!
- Climbing these peaks offers experienced walkers the opportunity to explore Scotland’s finest scenery and remote locations. That is why Ascension Adventures is here to help you plan your Munro bagging challenge.
